Chapter 15: The Front Desk

The lobby of the Aldrich flagship held two hundred people at nine on Wednesday morning, and thirty of them had cameras.

I stood in the revolving door with my hands in my coat pockets and watched Weston walk to the front desk.

He carried a cream folder.

He did not look at the lights, or the microphones, or the woman from a local station who stepped into his path.

He laid the folder on the marble counter and opened it.

Inside was the marriage certificate from Boston City Hall, with a stamp, two signatures and a date three years old.

The lobby went silent.

"My name is Weston Aldrich," he said, in the voice he used for rooms. "Some of you have seen a photograph. Some of you have read what was written under it."

A flash popped.

"The woman in that photograph is not my assistant. She is my wife."

A murmur broke across the lobby.

"We married three years ago at City Hall. I asked her to keep it secret, so my family and my business would not interfere. I used our marriage to protect my shares, and I called it a convenience." He put his palm on the certificate. "Last week I ended it in a hotel suite, in a cruel way, for a reason that does not matter."
