Chapter 20: Elowen Says No

Elowen walked up to Voltraine Hall on Thursday morning, by the front drive, alone.

She had told the household at breakfast.

They had objected, in three voices, and she had listened to all of them and said, "No. I'm going to say it myself."

Calista had looked at her for a long moment, and then she had said, "Then take the ledger."

It lay in the satchel now against her hip, the green book the clerk had brought in the night.

He had stood weeping in the kitchen, a man of fifty, and said that the trustees had been told to look away.

He had looked away, and could not do it any longer.

It listed every crown that had left the Tarn trust in four years, in the Marquis's hand.

Ninety thousand.

Elowen had read it with her own eyes at the kitchen table, and she knew every line.

She was nineteen, and she was a little sick.

And she was going to walk into that house, past that door, in front of those people, and say a thing she had never been allowed to say in it.

The footman bowed her in.

He looked as though he wanted to say something kind, and could not.

In the blue room the Earl of Wescote sat on the sofa with a cup of tea, his gouty foot propped on a stool.
