Chapter 9: Whole Night
I shut the door of the room over the shack, turned the key, and put my hand flat on Brendan's chest.
"Sit," I said.
He looked at the bed.
It was a narrow iron bed with a faded quilt, and under the one lamp it looked smaller than I had remembered.
"Sit on the end," I said. "Hands behind you."
His eyebrows went up.
"You're giving orders?"
"Tonight I say what happens," I said. "That's the rule. Out of bed, I decide who decides in bed."
"I remember the rule."
"Then sit."
He sat.
The mattress dipped under him, and the springs complained, and downstairs Frankie's radio was playing an old country song about a woman who left.
He put his hands behind him.
I took the long cotton scarf off the hook on the back of the door.
It was the green one I wore to give tours in the cold.
I wound it round his wrists, twice, and knotted it loosely.
"You can get out of that whenever you want," I said.
"I know."
"Do you want to?"
"No," he said, and his voice had changed.
I stood in front of him between his knees.
The room was warm, and the tin roof ticked as it cooled, and I could smell the salt marsh through the open window.
I took off my sweater slowly and dropped it.
I unbuttoned my jeans and pushed them down my legs and stepped out of them.
I stood in the lamplight in a plain white bra and underwear I had not picked for anyone.
His eyes followed every inch.
"You're staring," I said.
"You told me to sit still. You didn't say I couldn't look."
"Look, then."
I unhooked my bra and let it fall.
He drew a breath and held it.
I slid my underwear down and kicked it aside, and I stood naked in front of him with my hands at my sides.
