Chapter 19: Half of Sixty

A month after the gala, Su Ye put a document on the boardroom table in front of Lu Chen and said, "Read the last page first."

Nine directors sat round the table, and the Chairman sat at the head.

Lu Chen looked at the document.

It was a share transfer, four pages, with a yellow tab on every signature line.

"This is irregular," he said.

"It's a gift."

"I don't like expensive gifts."

"It's very expensive," said Su Ye. "I checked. Last page."

Lu Chen sighed, turned it over to the end, and read.

He read it once, and his face did not change.

He read it again.

On the last page, in the box marked transferee, was his own name, and in the box marked holding was a figure.

Thirty percent of the family holding, out of Su Ye's sixty.

"Half," Lu Chen said, in a very small, very even voice. "That's half of what you own."

"It's half of what I own. Sign at the yellow tab."

"Su Ye, this is the company."

"It's thirty percent of it. You'd have a vote every time my father tries to give me a point."

Su Ye smiled, wide and easy.

"I want my husband to be the one who outvotes me."

Lu Chen opened his mouth.

His glasses slid down his nose.

He said, "I think I'm..." and slid sideways out of his chair.

Su Ye caught him before his head hit the carpet.

"Point one," said the Chairman, rising. "Somebody get a doctor."

"Point two," said a director, helpfully, "was it the shrimp?"

"There was no shrimp."

"Then the pastry."

"Out," said the Chairman. "All of you. Take your pens."

The directors filed out with their folders, with many backward glances.

Mrs. Su, who had been waiting in the corridor with a thermos, put her head round the door.

The Chairman took her by the elbow.

"Not yet," he said. "Give them a minute. Point three, the doctor is on her way."

The door closed.
