Chapter 5: Suppressants

By midnight the study was empty and the bathroom door was locked from the inside.

Su Ye sat on the cold tiles with his back against the tub and a glass of water shaking in his hand.

He had taken a second suppressant at eleven.

He had taken a third ten minutes ago, against the advice printed on the box.

The heat had not noticed any of them.

It rolled up his spine in slow, hot waves.

His thighs were wet, his cock was hard against his trousers, and every breath tasted of his own scent.

"This is fine," he told the empty room. "This is a normal Tuesday."

A knock came at the connecting door.

"Su Ye?"

"I'm brushing my teeth."

"For forty minutes?"

"It's a thorough brush."

There was a pause.

"Su Ye. I can smell you through the wall."

Su Ye put his forehead on his knees.

"That's the pipe," he said. "The pipe's broken."

"Open the door."

"I can't. I'm having a very private emergency, and you've already been in a shower with me once this week, and I have a reputation."

"Su Ye." Lu Chen's voice had dropped, and it was not calm any longer. "You're in heat."

"It's the suppressant. It always works. I've taken them every cycle for two years, and it always works."

"Two years?"

"Shu Fen was at the office." Su Ye laughed, high and strange. "He was always at the office. The first time, I sat on the bathroom floor by myself for three days, and he came home on the fourth and asked why the apartment smelled odd."

The door on the other side was quiet.

"So I took the pills," Su Ye said. "Every month. I'm a very good husband. I'm very easy to live with. I don't need anyone to help me with it, you see, because I take the pills, and today the pills are not working, and I'd like to be left alone to be embarrassed."

He heard a soft thump, which was Lu Chen putting his forehead against the door.

"Unlock it," Lu Chen said. "Please."

"No."

"I'm not him. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere. Unlock the door."
