Chapter 10: The First Night

I knocked on his door at eleven the next night.

His apartment was behind the tire shop, up a set of outside stairs, and it had one light on.

Cal opened the door in a gray T-shirt and bare feet.

He did not say anything.

"I can't tell you yet," I said. "I told you that."

"You did."

"I can still want you."

His hand tightened on the doorframe.

"Rae."

"I want you. That part isn't a lie."

He stepped back, and I walked in.

The door closed behind me, and then his hands were on my face and his mouth was on mine.

It was nothing like the first kiss.

That one had been a question.

This one was an answer, slow and deep and hungry, and I felt it all the way down.

I pushed his T-shirt up over his head.

He let me.

His chest was broad and scarred in a few places, with a long pale line across his ribs, and I put my mouth on it.

He swore under his breath.

"Bed," he said. "Now."

"Yes."

He picked me up.

I wrapped my legs around his waist, and he carried me across the room and sat me on the edge of the bed and knelt on the floor between my knees.

He looked up at me.

"Tell me what you like."

"I don't know," I said. "I've never had time."

His eyes went dark.

"Then we'll find out."

He pulled my sweatshirt over my head, and then my T-shirt, and he stopped with his hands on my ribs.

"God, you're beautiful."

"I'm covered in bruises."

"I know." He kissed one on my side, soft. "That's what I'm looking at."

He unhooked my bra and took it off.

His mouth closed over my nipple, and I arched off the bed and grabbed his hair.
