Chapter 11: Release of Claims

I stood in the doorway with the sign-in sheet in my hand.

Bea put her finger on the poster and waited.

"It's a mole," I said.

"It's exactly where hers is. Left eye, under the lash line, a little off center." She sat back. "I looked at a hundred pictures of you this week."

"Bea."

"I figured it out the day you put me on the floor. The jab gave you away. Cal never taught me to throw it like that, and nobody in this town throws it like that." She pushed a lock of pink-tipped hair behind her ear. "I've watched every one of your fights, Rae. Twice. I was going to ask for your autograph."

I closed the door behind me.

"Who else knows?"

"Cal does. He's been humming since yesterday, and he doesn't hum." She raised her eyebrows. "And your hoodie is on inside out, which means you're not a front desk girl and you're not just a boarder."

"Bea."

"I'm not saying anything."

"You're saying a lot."

"I'm very quiet." She ripped the poster in half, and then in half again, and dropped it in the wastebasket. "That's what I think of fifty thousand dollars."

I sat down on the stool.

My hands were shaking.

"You could use fifty thousand dollars."

"I could use a lot of things," Bea said. "I could use a pro contract and a manager who isn't a creep. But I'm not selling the one person in this gym who hits harder than me."
