Chapter 4: Wrapped

The glass door closed behind the investigator, and Cal watched him go down the stairs.

He listened until the street door shut.

Then he said, "Bea. Go get us lunch. Take as long as you want."

"It's ten past noon."

"Take two hours."

Bea looked at him and at me, and for once she did not argue.

She left. The door swung.

My knees would not hold me, so I sat down on the stool behind the desk.

"You lied to him," I said.

"I told him I hadn't seen her."

"You looked at the picture for a long time."

"I did."

"Cal."

"That's a question," he said, and he held out his hand. "Give me your hands."

I put them on the desk.

They were shaking.

I had fought twenty-two times in front of full arenas with these hands and they had never once shaken.

Cal pulled the stool around and sat across from me, and he took my right hand in both of his.

"Your wrap is all wrong," he said.

"It's the way I always do it."

"It's the way somebody taught you to do it fast." He started to unwind the cloth from my knuckles. "That's why your thumb is bad. You'll be hurt in a year."

His fingers were rough and dry, and they were warm.

He wound the wrap around my wrist twice, tight, and then once across the palm, and then he turned my hand over and pressed his thumb into the inside of my wrist to hold the cloth in place.
