Chapter 5: Dawn Round

I did not sleep that night either.

I kept feeling Cal's thumb on the inside of my wrist.

At six in the morning Bea was in the gym with the lights half on and her gloves around her neck.

"Cal went to the supply store," she said. "He'll be gone fifteen minutes. Spar me."

"No."

"Why?"

"The rule is no sparring unless he's standing there."

"The rule is Cal's. This is my gym too, I've been in it since I was fifteen." She dropped the gloves in my hands. "You've got calluses and a jab. I've been watching you tape for three days, and you don't tape like a girl who does dishes."

"I told you."

"You told me a lot of things."

She tied her ponytail up high and climbed through the ropes.

"Come on, Callie. One round. If you're what you say, you'll lose in about a minute and I'll feel bad for you."

I should have walked away.

But for four days I had been mopping a floor and sorting receipts and lying to people I liked, and my hands had not stopped aching.

I put on the gloves.

"One round," I said. "Light."

"Light," Bea agreed, and she hit me in the ribs.

It was a good shot.
