Chapter 6: Left Hand

Bea went to hold a bag of ice on her nose, and she took her time doing it.

Cal waited until the freezer door banged.

Then he climbed through the ropes and stood in front of me.

"I'm not asking your name," he said.

"Okay."

"I'm asking what you did before you got on that bus."

"I boxed."

"Professionally."

"Yes."

"For long?"

"Since I was thirteen."

He nodded slowly.

"And now you're hiding."

"Yes."

"From a man."

I looked at the canvas.

"Yes," I said.

He shook his head slowly.

"You heard me say it the other day. About fighters who quit."

"I heard you."

"You went white."

"I know what I looked like."

"I said I don't have patience for it," Cal said. "I didn't say I don't know why they do."

He put his hands on his hips and looked at the ceiling for a moment.

"I won't send you away. I don't care what you did. But you're not going to spend your days mopping a locker room when you throw a jab like that. It's a waste, and it's going to eat you alive."

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying you train. Here, in this ring, with me watching. You're Callie Banks, a girl from nowhere who has a good left hand and a bad habit."

"No sparring."

"No sparring. Not with Bea, not with anyone. And when somebody comes to the door with a picture, you go in the back."
