Chapter 8: Who Is Rae

The back door slammed against the wall.

I had one hand twisted in Lou's jacket and the benefit poster crushed in the other, and I had not heard anyone on the stairs.

Cal came out of the dark fast.

He took Lou by the collar and put him against the dumpster so hard the lid rang.

"Cal, wait," I said.

"Is this him?"

"What?"

"Is this the man you're hiding from?"

"No. Let him go."

"You're shaking." He did not look at me. His eyes were on Lou, and they were colder than I had ever seen them. "You came to my door with a face that said somebody had hurt you. This man is in my alley and you're crying."

"I'm not crying."

"Callie."

"I'm not."

He was holding Lou a few inches off the ground, and Lou did not fight him.

"Go on, son," Lou said. "Hit me. I've got it coming."

"What did you do to her?"

"What I did to her is worse than anything you can do to me."

Cal's fist tightened.

"Cal." I grabbed his forearm with both hands. "Please. Put him down. He's my cornerman."

He turned his head.

"Your what?"

I had said it before I thought.

The alley went quiet except for the rain on the dumpster lid.

Cal let go of the jacket slowly, and Lou slid down the wall onto a milk crate and rubbed his neck.
