Chapter 4: Flour on My Cheek

I waited until the twins were asleep, because I didn't trust my face in front of them.

Then I made sugar cookies for the preschool bake sale, because I needed something to do with my hands.

At ten, Keith came down in his socks for a glass of water.

He stopped in the kitchen doorway.

There was flour on the counter, on the floor and on my forearms to the elbow.

"You don't usually bake," he said.

"I don't usually have a reason to."

I took the white rose's card out of my back pocket and laid it on the table between us.

I didn't say who it was from.

He sat down across from me and read it with the kitchen light making his face plain and tired.

He read the date, the two times, and the last line.

He did not ask what the last line meant.

I watched his eyes go over it twice, and then he folded his hands.

"Preston came to the shop today," I said. "In front of customers. I threw him out."

"Good."

"He was outside the preschool this morning. Milo saw him smiling at us."

"I know."

I stared at him.

"You know?"

"The man I hired two years ago still sends me a note when Preston's name comes up. Preston moved back to Columbus in September." Keith turned the card over. "I didn't tell you because you'd have been afraid, and there was nothing to do about it yet."
