Chapter 7: Flowers

Beau came home after midnight with a bouquet of white roses and a bottle of the wine we drank on our honeymoon.

I was sitting up in bed with the lamp on and my laptop closed on my knees.

He stood in the bedroom doorway and held the flowers out in front of him with both hands.

"I was a jerk tonight," he said.

"You were."

"I'd had four glasses of champagne and a night of people looking at me."

"I know."

"I grabbed you." He looked at my wrist, which I had left bare on top of the blanket. The marks were purple now. "God, Mar. I'm so sorry."

He came across the room and sat on the edge of the mattress.

He set the roses on the nightstand, and the stems dripped on the wood.

I let him take my hand.

His thumb ran over the marks, softly, the same thumb that had made them.

"I was scared," he said. "The deal, the album, the whole week. It's a lot of people's money. I get scared and I take it out on the one person I know won't leave."

"That's what you think about me."

"That's what I'm grateful for."

His eyes were wet. They were good eyes, and I had spent five years trusting them.
