Chapter 5: Marlow Road
I played it once in the kitchen with the volume as low as it went.
The speaker was tiny and tinny, and a man's voice came out of it thin and far away.
"Edith, it's Rhys. I know it's late. Don't be scared, nothing's wrong with me."
A car engine hummed under his words, and I heard his turn signal ticking.
"I'm on Marlow Road. I left the house twenty minutes ago and I'm coming to you. I found something about Teddy. About Graham, and about Delphine."
There was a pause.
His breath came out ragged and short.
"I can't say it on the phone. I took pictures, and I have the paper with me. Don't open the door to anyone but me. I'll be there in about ten minutes."
Then, quieter, almost to himself: "God, I'm an idiot. I should have seen it two years ago."
The message ended with a hard click.
I stood with the phone pressed to my chest and my mouth open.
The kitchen clock ticked.
A gull screamed on the roof.
I had been married to Graham for fourteen months, and not once had he said that his brother left the house that night to come to my grandmother.
The official story was that Rhys had been driving home from a late shift at the marina and lost the road in the rain.
I picked up the little phone and walked down the drive.
Cal was in the garage with the boat, but he was not working.
He stood with a mug of coffee gone cold in his hand, looking at the door.
"You opened it," he said.
"I need you to listen to something."
"Then come in and shut the door."
