Chapter 16: Everything
Neil stood in the middle of the dining room holding the letter.
The couple from out of town slowly put their napkins on the table.
"Finish your dinners," I told the room. "Please. Everyone's meal tonight is on the house."
Somebody at the bar started to clap.
Neil flinched.
He looked at his mother.
Lorna looked back at him, pearls and cashmere, not moving.
"You did this," he said.
"No, darling," Lorna said. "You did."
He folded the letter in half.
Then in half again.
He put it in his jacket pocket, right where he'd carried the lawsuit to brunch.
Then he walked out the front door of the restaurant he'd named after himself.
Nobody stopped him.
The last table left at eleven-forty.
I locked the front door myself.
Then I went to the kitchen.
The temp cooks had already gone.
The line was dirty, the hood filmed with grease, the walk-in half empty.
My father's money was in every inch of it.
I put my hand flat on the cold steel of the pass.
It was still mine.
It had always been mine.
It took three weeks to make it right again.
The produce supplier drove in with a whole truckload of ducks and refused to leave until he'd helped scrub the hood.
The fish supplier brought his teenage son to haul out the old fryers.
