Chapter 15: Unwell

Lars's truck came up the gravel road just after dark, with the high beams on.

I stood at the kitchen window of the cabin and watched the lights cross the ceiling.

"Stay inside," Nolan said.

"It's my husband."

"That's why."

He took the porch. I took the doorway behind him, where I could see.

Lars got out in the navy overcoat he wore for press conferences. He left the engine running, so the headlights lit both of us.

He smiled at me.

"There you are, Joss. You look rested."

"Say what you came to say."

"I will." He climbed the first step. "Belinda called me from your father's kitchen. She says you were very upset."

"She told you I know."

"I gathered." He looked at Nolan and his voice dropped, friendly and easy. "Brumley. You've been busy."

"You're on my property, Captain."

"I'm on the property of a man who took a sealed medical record out of a locked team cabinet." He let that sit. "That's theft of a player's file. It's a breach of the state board's code. I filed the complaint an hour ago."

I felt Nolan go still beside me.

"Your license goes on review in the morning," Lars said. "A trainer who can't keep a file shut doesn't work in this league again. Not here, not in juniors, not at a high school gym."

"You told me to keep it shut for the same reason you want it open now," Nolan said. "Which is it?"

"It's whichever one gets us all out of this."

He turned to me. His face went gentle, the way it did on camera.

"I'm offering you a way out, Joss. One page. You sign that you were unwell and confused, that Belinda's baby is mine, and that you took files you shouldn't have. In return I drop the complaint. You keep the cabin guest house, a monthly check. Nolan keeps his job."
