Chapter 7: Staff
On Friday morning a man in a gray jacket was parked at the end of our drive.
He was still there when I took Maisie to school.
He was in the pick-up line behind us at three.
Philip had called the security firm that watched his offices, and now they watched me.
I did not look at him once.
At four, I went where I was told, to a bridal salon on Bellevue Avenue, because Philip said the dress fitting was not optional.
The salon smelled of gardenias and money.
Whitney stood on a little round platform in white silk, turning in three mirrors.
Her fiancé's mother sat on a velvet sofa with her purse on her lap.
She was a thin, polite woman in pearls, and she gave me a small nod.
"Roz!" Whitney said. "There you are. I have a gift for you."
She snapped her fingers.
An assistant came out of the back room carrying a folded black dress and a white apron.
It was a caterer's uniform.
Whitney took it from her and held it up for the room to see.
"You said you wanted to be useful at the party," she told me in a bright voice. "I talked to the catering company, and they've found you a place on the service line. You can pour champagne for the guests."
I had said no such thing.
She knew it.
She had pitched her voice to carry to the sofa.
Her fiancé's mother looked from the uniform to me, and her polite face went very still.
"Whitney, dear," she said. "Isn't Mrs. Carraway family?"
"Oh, she insists," Whitney said. "She's very humble. It's one of her best qualities."
