Chapter 16: The Shed

My principal watched the lock log on her office monitor with her glasses pushed up into her hair.

She watched it all the way to the tenth entry, and then she watched the doorbell clip twice.

"Tori Prescott called the district on Friday," she said. "She said you were unstable and a danger to students."

"I know."

"She sent a link to a video. I watched that too." She took her glasses off. "I've been a principal for nineteen years, Brooke. I know what a stage looks like."

"I'm sorry it came into your building."

"Don't be. I told the district you have my full support, in writing." She slid a printed page across the desk. "Go to your three o'clock."

I went.

I held my three o'clock, and a girl told me about her best friend, and for half an hour nothing in the world was mine to fix except that.

At four I drove across the bridge to the yard.

Gabe was standing outside the shed with the owner, and neither man looked happy.

"She came by," the owner said, when I got out of the car. "This morning. The sweet little blonde."

"Kendra," Gabe said.

"She brought a coffee cake. She said you'd been through a hard time and needed gentle handling, and that you sometimes lose your temper." The owner rubbed his neck. "I don't believe it. But a man hears that, and he wonders about the lease."

I took out my phone.

"Watch this," I said, and I played him the clip.

He watched Brent's grin and the red cans going into the truck.

He watched Kendra's two-finger wave at the camera.

Then he watched it again with his eyes narrowed.

"Sunday, five fourteen," he said. "That's three hours before my shed."

"Yes."

"And she was at my office with a coffee cake this morning."

"Yes."

The owner handed the phone back and looked at Gabe.

"Your lease is fine," he said. "Send me a bill for the cedar and I'll send it to my insurance. And if that woman comes through my gate again, I'm calling the sheriff."
