Chapter 7: Going Public

"Say hello, everybody," Colby said to his phone. "This is the neighbor who's been so helpful to my fiancée."

The little counter in the corner of his screen said two thousand people were watching.

"Ex-fiancée," I said. "And you're live."

"That's right, I'm live," he said, and turned the phone on Gabe. "Are you sleeping with her?"

Gabe didn't look at the camera. He looked at me.

"Your call," he said.

"Don't film him," I told Colby.

"Why? Got something to hide?"

I came down the steps and stood in front of the lens, close enough that he had to look at me.

"I'll tell you what's on my porch," I said to the screen. "A new light bulb, a ladder and a neighbor who fixed it for free."

"I'm Brooke. I'm the woman in the video Tori cut down to forty seconds."

Comments began to move faster than I could read them.

"I own half of this house. I paid for the housewarming. I was sent to the wrong town on purpose, and Colby moved the money from our house account into the brand's account on Sunday night."

"Turn it off," Colby said, quietly.

"Does it bother you that people can hear it?" I asked. "Real family doesn't need to ask, remember?"

He lowered the phone, and the live ended.

Gabe put the ladder on his shoulder.

"I'm sorry," he said. "That was a lot of people at once."

"Don't be," I said. "I've never said it out loud to that many people."

"How did it feel?"

I thought about it.

"Like a window opening," I said.
