Chapter 15: First Night

Jill left at eight with June, the bear, a duffel bag and a very straight face.

"Movie night at my place," she said at the cottage door. "Popcorn. Late. Don't call unless something is on fire."

"Something might be," Ross said.

Jill looked at him, and at me, and nodded once.

June hugged my legs.

"Be good, Mommy."

"I'm always good."

"You're mostly good," June said, and let Jill carry her to the car.

The taillights went down the gravel road and into the trees.

I stood in the kitchen with the dinner plates in my hands.

Ross had made eggs, and they had been very good.

He took the plates from me and set them in the sink.

"Say it again," I said.

"Say what?"

"What you said on the curb. Without Jill."

He turned around and looked at me for a long time.

"I want to put you on that counter and eat you until you can't stand," he said.

"Then I want to fuck you until you say my name."

My knees were not entirely mine.

"That's better," I said.

He crossed the kitchen in two steps.

His mouth came down on mine, and there was nothing careful in it this time.

I grabbed his shirt in both fists.

He lifted me by the thighs and set me on the counter, and the edge cut into the backs of my legs.

I did not care.

I got his buttons open one at a time and shoved the shirt off his shoulders.

His chest was hot under my palms, and his heart slammed against my hand.

"Your sweater," he said into my neck.

I raised my arms and he pulled it off over my head and dropped it on the floor.

He pushed the straps of my bra down and took my breast in his mouth.

I made a sound I had never heard myself make.

His tongue went slowly over my nipple, and then his teeth, and I put my hand in his hair and held him there.
