Chapter 6: Creditor
I read the statement three times standing in the courthouse corridor.
Pancake house, Millbrook. Trampoline park, Millbrook. Zoo. Children's museum.
Every Sunday for a year, and a child's menu on most of them.
"June told me they went to the park," I said.
"Maybe some Sundays they did," Ross said.
"Who ate the second pancake?"
"I don't know," he said. "That's why I'm showing you."
I called my lawyer's office from the bench.
She answered on the second ring, and I told her what I'd seen.
"Do not ask June about it," she said at once.
"She's my daughter."
"And she's six. A mother who questions a child before a custody hearing is a mother who coached her. Derek's lawyer will say that and the judge will believe it. If June has something to say, a neutral person asks her. Not you."
"Then what do I do?"
"You breathe," she said. "And you let me bill someone."
She hung up to take a call from the court.
I sat there with my jaw tight.
Ross hadn't moved.
"The retainer for a full case is eight thousand," he said. "Your friend paid the deposit. I'd like to cover the rest."
"No."
"You haven't heard why."
"I don't need to," I said. "Last week I was a woman with a husband and a house. Today I'm a woman on a bench with a folder from a stranger. I'm not going to owe a man I met on a lawn."
"You won't owe me," Ross said. "Derek lied to my company. Your case proves that. I'd be paying for something I want anyway."
