Chapter 12: The Card

Four weeks later I sat in the visitors' family section of the Stampede's stadium with my son in a sling and a ticket that Zach had paid for.

It came under item three on the napkin: Zach pays for what Gus needs, and Janie decides what that is.

I had decided Gus needed to go to a football game.

Lyle sat on my left in his plaid work shirt with a cushion he had brought from home.

On my right sat Zach's mother, a small woman in a Roughnecks cap, with her son's gray eyes and a sharp, pleasant face.

She had been holding Gus for ten minutes and had not said a word.

Then she turned the baby gently so that his head lay against her shoulder, and she looked at his left ear.

"Oh, there it is," she said.

I went rigid.

"Term one," I whispered.

"I don't know what term one is, honey," she said kindly. "But I knew when Lyle told the church. And I knew when Zach took my casserole dish and forgot to bring it back."

She patted my knee.

"I made the pie for you today. It's in my purse."

I laughed so hard that my rib complained.

"Left side," Lyle said, without looking away from the field. "She cracked it in my car."

"I know," his neighbor said. "My son wrote it on a sticky note and put it on my refrigerator. 'Janie's left side.' I thought it was a football play."

The stadium was loud.

It was the same loud as the night I had left it.

From where I sat, I could see the Stampede's family box at the fifty-yard line behind a pane of glass.

Lacey was in it.

She wore a cream sweater and a scarf in the team's colors.

She didn't look down at me once.
