Chapter 6: The Chairman

The elevator opened on the top floor, and Conrad Roswell was waiting behind a desk the size of my bed.

He was an old man with white hair and a cane hooked over the chair, and he stood when I came in.

That surprised me.

"Ms. Marsden," he said. "Please sit. Not you, Gavin."

Gavin, who had been trying to sit, stayed on his feet.

Philippa went to the window and stood with her back to us.

Marcy had been left in the hall with a security guard, and she was shouting something about her rights.

I sat in the leather chair and kept my bag in my lap.

"My head of security tells me you made a scene in my kitchen," Conrad said.

"I asked him where my savings went."

"He says it was a deposit on a restaurant."

"He can't say where it is."

Conrad turned his head slowly toward Gavin.

"Can you?"

"Mr. Roswell, it's complicated."

"Is it?"

Gavin said nothing.

Conrad looked back at me.

His eyes were pale blue and tired, and very sharp.

"I have known my son-in-law for eight years," he said. "He is a decent cook and a poor liar. I would like to apologize for him."

"Father," Philippa said, from the window.

"I'm talking, sweetheart."

He leaned forward on his elbows.

"What he did to you was wrong. I'm not a man who excuses it. But I would like to understand it, and so I have a question for you, and I would like you to answer it honestly."
