Chapter 4: Congratulations
Maggie moved a coffeepot an inch to the left, which was how she told me she was listening.
"Sit down, Skylar," I said.
She sat on the stool next to mine.
Up close she looked younger than twenty-six.
She had been crying, and her nose was pink from it.
"I'm ten weeks," she said. "I found out Tuesday."
"Congratulations."
"Hannah, don't."
"I mean it. It's good news."
She pressed her lips together.
"He told me you were finished," she said. "He said you'd been living separate lives for a year, that you slept in different rooms and kept the marriage for his mother's sake."
"We have one bedroom," I said.
Skylar went red.
"I know that now," she said. "I saw it last night. The way you walked in. You weren't a woman who'd been living separate."
"I wasn't."
"He told me to text you," she said, and her voice cracked. "At six. He said to say he was stuck in Jersey so you wouldn't come looking."
"I know."
"I'm so sorry."
"You wrote 'happy anniversary' with two exclamation points."
"He dictated it."
I looked at the bakery box.
It had a ribbon on it.
She'd stood in a shop this morning and picked out a ribbon.
I felt the first small stab of pity, and then she opened her mouth again.
"But Hannah, you have to be honest with me," she said. "You can't keep holding on. He's going to be a father. The baby needs a stable home, and you walked into a room full of his clients and humiliated him. People are saying terrible things about him online."
I stared at her.
