Chapter 10: The Charm

Cavan woke to a cold place on his chest where the charm should have been.

The nest was empty. The lamp was out.

Firelight moved on the ceiling.

Fenny stood at the hearth in his shirtsleeves with his back to the room.

His fist hung open at his side, and the leather cord trailed from it onto the stones.

In the fire, the gold disc lay in the coals, glowing a poisonous green.

"What did you do?" Cavan said.

Fenny turned.

His face was grey and set, and there was a long red line across his palm where the cord had bitten.

"I took it off you."

"You threw it in the fire."

"It was making you worse."

Cavan was across the room before he knew he had moved.

He caught Fenny by the front of his shirt and slammed him back against the mantel.

A candlestick fell and rolled.

"That was my brother's gift," he said, and his voice came out in a snarl. "That was the only thing he ever gave me. You had no right."

"I have every right. I'm your doctor."

"You're my..."

"Say it." Fenny's eyes flashed. "Say what I am to you. You said it once already."

Cavan stopped.

"When?"

"The night your mother brought you to my clinic." Fenny's voice shook. "I knelt on my own bathroom floor. I'd just put my hands on you, and you changed, and I thought, here's a man who is frightened. I'll be careful. And then you walked out of my bathroom, and through the door, you said to your mother..."
