Chapter 18: Both

Cavan woke in his own bed with the curtains drawn and a cool cloth on his forehead.

For a moment he did not know why his whole body felt warm and heavy.

Then he turned his head, and Fenny was lying beside him, pale, with his glasses off and a hand over his stomach.

"You're awake," Fenny whispered.

"What happened?"

"We fainted. In front of the whole pack."

Cavan tried to laugh and found the laugh was sweet and shaky.

The honey scent in the room was thick, and it was not only his.

Warm sugar and milk rose off Fenny too, and it mingled with his own until he could not have said whose was whose.

"We're both omega," Cavan said slowly.

"Yes."

"That's never happened."

"No." Fenny stared at the canopy. "Not in forty flips. Not once."

The door opened, and the Hall's healer came in with Miranda behind her.

The healer was a small, brisk woman in an apron.

She set her bag on the end of the bed and looked at them both with narrowed eyes.

"Good," she said. "You can sit up. Sit up slowly."

They sat.

Miranda stood at the foot of the bed with her hands clasped in front of her.

"The pack carried you out on their shoulders," she said. "Both of you. I have never seen the great hall so loud."

"Roddy?" Cavan asked.

"In the cells. Your father is with him."

Cavan nodded.

He found he could not hold the thought for long.
