Chapter 21: Luna of Goldridge

The pack married them again nine days later, and this time the whole pack was invited.

They filled the great hall and the courtyard outside it.

The wolves who could not get in stood on the walls.

Cavan waited at the head of the hall in the old gold coat of the Primes.

He was alpha, and calm, and his hands were not steady anyway.

The doors opened, and Fenny came up the long aisle on Miranda's arm.

He wore grey, because he had refused to wear anything else.

His russet hair hung loose to his collar, and his round glasses caught the light from the high windows.

Cavan had married him once already.

He had not known, then, what it was to watch Fenny walk toward him.

The old councillor waited on the dais with the pack's white stole across his arms.

"By the old law," he said, "a Prime's mate is called Luna."

He let the word sit.

"The law does not say a Luna must be an omega, or an alpha, or one thing for life."

He looked out over the benches.

"It says only that the Prime chooses, and the pack agrees."

He turned to the benches.

"Does the pack agree?"

The noise came up from every throat in the hall, and Cavan felt it in the soles of his feet.

Fenny's grip tightened on Miranda's arm.

"Say it," Miranda told him, low. "Go on."

Fenny climbed the dais steps alone.

He stopped in front of Cavan, and the old councillor laid the stole over his shoulders.

"Fenny Fox," the old man said, "doctor of the lower town, named Luna of Goldridge. Do you take it?"
