Chapter 4: The Second Night

Cavan woke at dawn with his cock aching and his teeth set.

The honey was gone. His own scent filled the room again, pine smoke, heavy and hot, and every muscle in him pulled tight.

He was an alpha, and he was in rut.

He sat up and the sheet fell away from his hips.

Fenny was asleep in the chair by the desk with his head tipped back, his shirt open at the collar and his glasses folded in his lap.

The pine smoke that had come off him in the washroom was gone.

In its place there was something sweet and pale, warm milk and sugar, and it was seeping across the floor toward the bed.

Cavan slid out from under the sheet and crossed the room in three strides.

He did not decide to do it.

He knelt in front of the chair, put both hands on Fenny's knees, and breathed him in.

Fenny's eyes opened.

He looked down at Cavan, blinking, and his face went from sleep to alarm to something much softer.

"Prince," he said, thick. "What time is it?"

"You smell different."

"I know. I'm sorry. I'll fix it." Fenny's hand flew to his coat pocket. "It's the lapse, I missed a dose..."

Cavan caught his wrist.

"You smell like an omega."

Fenny's mouth fell open.

There was a wet patch spreading dark through the front of his trousers, and he saw Cavan see it.

"That's not..." he began, and his voice broke and went high. "It's not possible. It shouldn't do this."

"It's doing it."

"Let go. I need to go and take..."

"No."

Cavan stood, drawing Fenny up with him, and Fenny came up trembling.

He was as tall as Cavan, but he felt light in his hands, and all the brisk certainty had drained out of him.

"You've been on your knees for me all night," Cavan said, low. "Let me."

"It's not that."

"Then what is it?"

Fenny shut his eyes.

"It's treatment," he said. "An alpha in rut spikes if he's denied. A spike makes the next flip worse. The fastest way to ground it is..." He swallowed. "The fastest way is to get it out of you. With someone. Preferably me."
