Chapter 6: The Linen Room
The council sat at a long oak table, and the old councillor was explaining why the Prime should not rule.
"A season of weakness at the address," he said. "A husband from the lower town no one knew. The pack asks questions, my lord."
Cavan sat at his father's right hand with his palms flat on the wood.
Fenny sat at his own right, in the grey coat, writing nothing.
King Alex let the old man talk.
"The Prime has the right to rest," the councillor went on. "But if the Prime is not well enough to speak, perhaps a steadier hand should speak for the pack this winter. Prince Roddy has offered."
At the far end of the table, Roddy lowered his eyes and smiled modestly.
Cavan's pulse climbed.
"I am well," he said.
"That is not what the hall smelled, my lord."
Heat went through Cavan all at once.
It was not a slow roll. It came in a rush, from the gold at his chest straight down to his hips, and the wool of his trousers went wet in one hot pulse.
He gripped the table edge.
Pine smoke turned to honey in the room.
The old councillor's nostrils flared.
Fenny's chair scraped back.
"Majesty," he said, standing, in a clear loud voice. "I need to take the Prince for his treatment. He has had no rest today and he'll collapse if he stays."
He had Cavan by the arm before the king could speak.
Cavan stumbled up, blind, and let himself be led.
The corridor swung past, stone and tapestry and a startled page.
Fenny's hand held his bicep hard.
"In here," Fenny said, and shouldered through a low door.
The linen room was narrow and dark, shelves of folded sheets to the ceiling, with one barred window letting in a bar of light.
Fenny shut the door and pushed the bolt.
Cavan slid down the shelf to the floor, shaking.
