Chapter 19: Three Years Later

Three years later, on the morning of the league final, Raven Grandwell was on his back on an exam table.

He was twenty-five,and he was the best basketball player in the country.

The clinic was called the Jones Center for Omega Athletes.

It had a front door and a waiting room with a fish tank.

Over the reception desk hung a sign in Thompson's handwriting that said NO ONE CITES SECTION 4.1 IN HERE.

Noah, twenty-six, stood over him in a white coat with the cream sweater under it, holding a clipboard.

"Name," he said.

"You know my name."

"For the record."

"Raven Grandwell. Husband material. Fine."

"That's one," said Noah, and wrote it down.

He had been asking the same questions every game day for three years, and Raven had given the same answers for the first two.

"Pulse," said Noah, and took it.

His fingers were cool against the inside of Raven's wrist, and they stayed.

"A hundred and four," he said. "You're not nervous. What is it?"

Raven looked at the ceiling tiles.

"I'm nervous," he said. "I'm very nervous, and I want you to take your coat off."

Noah's pen stopped.

"That's an honest answer," he said softly.

"I've been practising."

Noah set the clipboard on the counter and locked the door.

He took off the white coat and the sweater and laid them both over the chair, and then he climbed up onto the table and straddled Raven's hips.
