Chapter 5: Bathing
Raven woke at noon with the tent flap open and a square of sun on his chest.
The heat was gone.
His body felt scrubbed clean and strange.
He put a hand to the left side of his neck and found bare skin.
The sticker had fallen off sometime in the night.
He checked the sleeping bag, the jacket, and the floor, and did not find it.
Noah's bag was empty.
A note was tucked in Raven's boot: Gone to wash. Drink the water. Eat the bar. Do not say you're fine.
Raven drank the water.
He ate the bar and found, to his surprise, that he was grinning.
The camp was empty, with the team off on a hike.
Raven followed the sound of water down a narrow trail to a bend in the stream where the rocks made a pool.
The first thing he smelled was sugar.
It was thick and sweet, and it hit him low in the stomach, and he stopped dead on the path.
The second thing he saw was Noah in the water to his waist.
His cream sweater lay folded on a rock, and he was gripping the stone ledge with both hands, head down, shoulders shaking.
"Noah?"
Noah jerked around.
His face was flushed, his hazel eyes were glazed, and his lips were bitten red.
"Don't come closer," he said. "I mean it. It's not safe."
"What's wrong?"
"It's your scent." Noah laughed, short and wrecked. "It's all over me. I'm on a cycle plan. It wasn't due for two days, and you pulled it early, and I came out here to cool down."
Raven waded in with his boots on.
"Tell me what to do."
"You don't have to do anything."
