Chapter 17: Savannah Again
The heat hit us at the jet bridge, a wet wall in the last week of October that smelled of cut grass and jet fuel.
Linus stopped in the middle of the walkway and tipped his head back.
"Mama. The air is soup."
"It's Georgia, bug," I said.
"Is it always soup?"
"Most of the year," Posey said, hauling the diaper bag that no longer held diapers. "You'll get used to it by Tuesday. I never have."
At the bottom of the escalator a tall woman in a white linen shirt waved both arms over her head.
She moved as though she were landing a plane.
Her auburn hair was longer now, past her chin.
She had lines at the corners of her eyes that had not been there four years ago.
"You came," Verity said, and crushed me in a hug before I could set down the carry-on.
"You sent me a Christmas card."
"I sent you eleven Christmas cards," Verity said.
