Chapter 18: The Hallway

Posey took Linus to the bench by the window with a bag of crackers before I had to ask.

I crossed the marble floor alone.

Lachlan stood where he was.

When I was six feet away he spoke, and his voice came out cracked.

"I withdrew my name this morning."

"Excuse me?" I said.

"From the petition. I walked into the clerk's office at eight and filed a notice. I'm no longer a petitioner. I want you to hear that before anything else."

"You signed it," I said.

"I didn't. Rosamund used an old proxy. A limited power of attorney I gave her six years ago, when my father's estate was still in probate. She never revoked it, and I never thought to." He held up a paper, and I saw the stamp of the clerk's office. "I found out on Thursday from the court's notice. The service had already gone out."

"You found out Thursday."

"Yes," he said.

"And you didn't call."

"I didn't have a number," Lachlan said. "I called your old one every night for two years, and then it was disconnected. Verity wouldn't give me the new one. She said it was yours to give."
