Chapter 5: Ninety Days
On Wednesday afternoon I was taping a gauze square onto a man's elbow when the waiting room went quiet.
It was the specific quiet of a room that has recognized a face.
I finished the tape and washed my hands.
Then I looked through the little window in the door.
Lachlan stood by the flu-shot flyers in a charcoal suit, with his hands at his sides and a clinic volunteer staring at him.
He had not shaved.
There was grey under his eyes that I had not seen even the night of the gala.
"Five minutes," I told the woman with the braids.
"I'll give you the supply closet," she said. "It locks from the inside."
"I don't need it to lock."
"Honey, you might."
I walked out to him.
"Not here," I said.
We went around the building to the loading dock, where the clinic's recycling bins stood beside a cracked concrete step.
Lachlan looked at the bins and then at my scrubs.
"They suspended you."
"They did," I said.
"I didn't know that. I would have stopped it."
"Would you?"
He opened his mouth and closed it.
"It's Wednesday," I said. "You have two days."
"I know what day it is."
"Then why are you standing at my dock instead of standing in front of your mother?"
"Because I need you to hear me first," Lachlan said.
He stepped in, and his voice dropped.
"Gadsden's lawyers sent the formal notice. Ninety days, Ione. If I can't refinance by then they take the terminal's collateral and the crews go to the next employer."
