Chapter 4: Thursday
"A woman alone for three years needs comfort," Madam said, still holding her hands. "Mingxuan would be the first to say so."
Wenxin could not make her mouth form a word.
"Only be discreet, dear. A family has its reputation." Madam patted her once, briskly. "I'm at the Group's board dinner on Thursday. Take your time with Mingxuan that evening."
She went down the stairs without looking back, and her bracelet clicked on the banister the whole way.
Wenxin stood on the landing until she heard the front door close.
She did not know what Madam wanted. She only knew that being forgiven for something she had not yet confessed felt worse than being caught.
On Thursday she took the evening shift at the hospital.
Mingxuan's private room was quiet and bright, with a window onto a ginkgo tree gone gold at the edges.
He lay as he always lay, thinner every month, his hair grown out and combed to one side by the day nurse.
She sat and opened the script of Letters Under Snow on her knees.
"I got the lead," she told him. "Your brother gave it to me."
The monitor ticked.
"I'm not going to tell you how," she said, and her voice cracked on the last word. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
Mingxuan had carried her mother's coffin up the cemetery steps, with his tie crooked and his sleeves rolled, when nobody else in his family would come.
She owed him her whole life, and she had spent last night in his brother's bed.
The door opened behind her.
She turned, expecting the nurse, and saw a tall woman in a plain gray coat with a thermos in one hand.
