Chapter 8: The Trailer

The rain machine ran for six hours, and by two in the morning Wenxin could no longer feel her hands.

The scene was the parting.

Su Min stood in the alley under the sprinklers while the Captain walked away.

She did not call after him.

She did it a dozen times.

On the last take she let the water run into her eyes and thought, After the wrap it won't matter.

The director said it was the best crying he had ever seen.

"Cut. Dry her off. Somebody get her a blanket."

Haoran's trailer was the nearest warm place.

She told herself that was the only reason she went there.

He came in behind her and locked the door. Rain was still dripping off his coat and his hair.

He took a towel from the shelf and held it out to her.

"You're blue," he said.

"I'm an actress. I'm very good at being cold."

"Miss Tang."

"Mr. Lu."

She dried her face and did not look at him.

He watched her do it, and she could feel him working out what was wrong.

"You went quiet this afternoon," he said. "Is it the call sheet?"

"No."

"Then what?"

She put the towel down.

It had been three years, and it came out in a voice so level that it frightened her.

"You did not come to my mother's funeral," Wenxin said.

Haoran went completely still.

"There were two hundred people there. Your brother carried the coffin."

She swallowed.

"You sent a wreath, and you didn't call. I stood at the grave and watched the gate the whole time."

"Wenxin..."

"Don't say my name. That's against the terms."

"Madam had my passport that week," he said.

For a moment she did not understand him.

Then she laughed, short and ugly. "Madam had your passport."
