Chapter 12: Ward of Graymoor
The court sat at noon in the great hall, with every pack in the capital on the benches.
Alpha Osric stood in the middle of the floor with his hat in his hands and his son beside him.
He looked old and gentle and wronged.
"Your Highness, I never wished to come," he said. "But I have raised this girl for seven years, and I can't let her be hurt."
"Hurt," said Lucan, from the high chair.
"The Wintermere Charter is plain. A child of an Alpha line whose pack has fallen may not mate without her guardian's consent until she has shown her wolf to the council. Morwen has shown nothing. I was never asked. The marriage is void."
A murmur ran around the hall.
The Duke leaned forward and touched his fingers together.
"The petition has ten signatures," he said mildly. "It would be a poor thing to ignore the law that protects orphans."
I sat in the chair beside Lucan's, in a green wool dress I had finished the night before, with my hands folded.
The wolf lay quiet under my ribs, listening.
I rose.
Lucan turned his head, and I shook mine very slightly.
"May I speak?" I asked the hall.
"The lady may speak," the Duke said, and smiled.
I walked down the steps until I was standing three feet from Osric.
"Alpha Osric," I said. "I want to be sure I understand the Charter."
"Of course, my dear."
"It applies to a child of an Alpha line."
"It does."
"A line that has fallen."
"Yes."
"So you're telling this court that I am Alpha-born," I said, loudly. "The daughter of Alpha Ainsley of Wintermere."
