Chapter 13: The Name Over the Door
The first thing Zhe noticed on the first of December was that the pillow smelled of nothing.
He lay on the cot in Qiu's back room and breathed it in twice.
Dust, old felt, a little camphor from the hammer shelves.
No sea salt, no cedar, no lime.
He got up and washed his face in the cold tap and looked at it in the cracked mirror.
It was a plain face with a soft jaw.
He smiled at it with his whole mouth, to see.
It looked like his father's, a little.
At eight Qiu came in from the street with two buns in paper and his reading glasses pushed up on his forehead.
"Bank opens at nine," he said. "Eat."
"I'm not hungry."
"You're a liar and a bad one. Eat."
They stood side by side at the counter of the bank on Nanshan Road, and the girl behind the glass printed a sheet.
Qiu read it with his lips moving.
Then he took off his glasses and wiped them on his apron, which he never did.
"Paid in full," he said. "The whole of it. The shop is mine."
