Langston stared at Jillian.
"What does that mean?"
Jillian pulled her coat tighter and pushed past him to the door.
"Ask her," she said. "She was there when your mother picked her."
The bell rang behind her.
She was gone.
Every phone in the shop swung back to Langston.
He didn't seem to see them.
He looked at me.
"Annabel. What is she talking about?"
"Not here," I said.
"Please."
I looked at the line.
At the girl with the braid and the quiet boy by the window, wide-eyed.
At Wesley, who hadn't moved from my shoulder.
"Your mother came to my parents' kitchen with the wedding already in a folder," I said quietly.
He put a hand on the counter like he needed it to stand.
"I thought your father asked for it," he said. "To lock in the loan."
"My father said no. Your mother didn't take no."
He was quiet for a long time.
