Chapter 21: Repayment

The owner took Brent into the glass office, and every person on the lot watched through the window.

I stood in the doorway with Dacey, Cass and Bear, holding my folder in both arms.

Inside, the owner's accountant sat down at the desk with a laptop.

Brent paced.

The owner said something short, and Brent stopped pacing.

He sat down in the customer chair, put his elbows on his knees and looked at the carpet.

The accountant turned the laptop around.

"Miss Gatlin," the owner called. "Your phone."

I crossed the room and held it up.

Brent took the laptop with a hand that wasn't quite steady, and he typed in my number and an amount.

Eleven thousand two hundred.

"There's a box for a note," the accountant said.

"I don't need a note."

"You'll write one," the owner said.

Brent looked up at him.

Then he typed a word and pressed send.

My phone buzzed against my palm.

I turned it over and read what it said.

Repayment, $11,200.00.

I read the word three times, because I had typed the other one eleven times.

"There you go," the owner said. "Dacey."

He did it again for her.

Three thousand two hundred, and the note said Repayment too, and Dacey stood very straight and watched the dollars go.

"What about the nine thousand?" she said.

"You never gave him the nine," I said.
