Chapter 5: Gold Dress

Maggie put me in her cousin's gold dress on Saturday night and refused to let me look in the mirror until she finished my hair.

"You're going to walk in there and make every rich person in Hartford feel cheap," she said.

"I'm going because Everard asked."

"You're going so Phillip can see what he's been missing." She turned me around. "Okay. Look."

The dress was gold beads on gold silk, cut low at the neck and snug at the waist.

I stared at the girl in the mirror. She did not look like someone who had ever kept her face still for a Chichester.

At seven there was a knock on the carriage house door.

Phillip stood on the step in a black suit with the stitches gone from his forehead and only a thin pink line left.

He looked at me and did not say anything for a long moment.

"You came to my door," I said.

"I came to take you." He held out his arm. "My father's driver is off tonight. I'm driving."

"After last time?"

"The red one is at the tow yard. I bought a new one on Thursday." He tipped his head toward the driveway. "My own mechanic took the brakes apart and put them together again. I watched him do every bolt."

I looked at the black car. It was a good sign, and I felt myself relax a little.

I took his arm.

In the car, he drove with both hands on the wheel and did not speed once.

"Today's question," he said at the first red light.

"Go ahead."

"Why did you hide behind that planter?"

"Because I wanted to see you coming."

He turned his head. "You were waiting for me."

"I was waiting for the car."

The light changed. He kept looking at me until a horn honked behind us.

The gala was in the Hartford Grand ballroom, under three chandeliers.
