Chapter 11: The Draper Name

The old man's study was on the second floor, at the back of the house, behind a door with a brass lock.

I had not been in it.

Roan opened it without knocking.

The old man sat at a desk the size of a car, with a ledger open under a green lamp and his blanket across his knees.

He didn't look up.

"I thought she'd come to me by lunch," he said. "The girl on the internet is quick."

"Friday," I said.

"Sit."

"I'll stand."

"As you like." He turned a page. "Your stepmother came to see me at seven this morning, while you were being cooked breakfast by a mute. She offered me her house, her jewelry, and a letter blaming your father for everything. I declined all three."

"Then why are you still talking to her?"

"I'm not." He finally lifted his eyes. "I told her I'd given the terms to you, in front of witnesses, and she could tell her daughter. It seems she did."

"Which terms?"

"Friday at noon," the old man said, "you sign the registry as Sutton Draper. In exchange, the debt is paid. Entirely. Your father walks free, and I never say his name again." He laced his fingers. "If you do not sign, I call the note at one o'clock, and two deputies take him from his office in front of the whole wharf."

I felt my stomach go cold.

"You said that Saturday."

"I said it Saturday, and you said your name was Landry, and I said 'very well.' It is still very well. It is also still Friday."

"You'd put a man in prison to make a girl change her name."

"I would put a thief in prison for stealing," he said. "I'm offering to put a name on a piece of paper instead. I think it's the cheaper price."
