Chapter 18: The Old Man's Bargain
Roan pushed the study door open with two fingers.
The old man looked up from his desk, the phone still in his hand.
"Eavesdropping," he said. "A Draper habit."
"You can't give her my name."
"I can give it to anyone I like."
"She posted a lie about my wife to four hundred people on Thursday night."
"I read the lie." The old man set the phone down. "It was well done. Sit at my table on Sunday, boy, and watch me listen to her."
"No."
"Let him," I said.
Roan turned.
I was standing in the doorway behind him, and I found that my voice was perfectly steady.
"If he's going to say yes to her," I said, "I want to see his face when he does."
The old man's mouth moved at one corner, the way his grandson's did.
"Sunday," he said. "Six o'clock. Wear the green."
On Sunday the long table in the dining room was set for twenty.
The old man's Sunday dinner was sixty years old, and it had grown.
Six wharf foremen sat with their wives, in their good jackets.
The housekeeper moved behind the chairs with a tureen.
At the foot of the table, small in his old suit, sat my father.
