Chapter 5: Breakfast With the Old Man

The knock came at seven exactly.

I was awake already, sitting up in the huge bed with the sheet over my knees.

The roll of cash from the lawn was in my hand.

Roan was asleep beside me on his stomach, one arm across my side of the mattress.

I'd watched him sleep for an hour.

He looked about nineteen with his face in the pillow.

"Mr. Draper's compliments," said a woman's voice through the door. "I'm to see to the room."

Roan woke instantly and began to get up.

I put a hand flat on his back.

"I've got this."

I pulled on his shirt, buttoned two buttons, and opened the door.

The housekeeper was sixty, grey, with a pressed apron and a face that had taken orders for forty years.

She had a basket of fresh linen on her hip.

I stepped out onto the dock and pulled the door almost shut behind me.

"Good morning," I said.

"Mrs. Draper."

"Landry."

She blinked.

"The bed has been slept in," I said. "By two adults, who were both very happy about it. You can tell Mr. Draper that, if you like, in those words. Or you can tell him the room is none of his business, which is the real answer."

Her mouth twitched.

It was the tiniest movement, and it wasn't disapproval.

"I've changed his sheets for forty years, miss," she said. "I've never once been asked to inspect them for anything but dust."

"Then don't start now."

"No, miss."

She turned around with her basket and went back up the dock.

Halfway to the lawn she stopped without looking back.

"Breakfast is on the terrace at eight," she said. "Mr. Draper doesn't like to wait. I'd bring the money, if I were you."

I looked at the cash in my hand.

"How did you know about the money?"

"Nobody comes up to this house in the middle of the night with a pocketful of cash to say sorry," she said. "I've seen it before."

She went on up the lawn.
