Chapter 18: The Shoebox

My mother sat on the gate post with the shoebox on her knees and her hat pushed back.

She had not slept either, and she looked ten years older.

"I want you to read it before you say anything," she said, and held it out.

It was a Nike box, soft at the corners, packed edge to edge with envelopes.

Every one of them was mine.

I knew my own handwriting on the front, and the stamps from Kisumu.

But the margins of the pages inside were full of pencil.

Small, neat, slanting notes, in a hand I had seen on a hundred birthday cards.

Next to a paragraph about a night delivery: Staff shortage. Ask her mom to send tea.

Next to a line about Alec: Director. Single. Watch this one.

Next to the line, I miss Clayton's terrible pancakes, which I had written once in a bad week: Don't tell G.

I turned the pages and my hands went cold.

"Every Sunday," my mother said. "She sat in my kitchen with her glasses on and read them to me, because my eyes are bad. And then she took them home to 'file' them. I thought she was being kind."

"She was marking them up."

"She was tracking you."

I found the last letter, the one I had written six weeks ago, about the extension.

In the margin, in pencil, circled twice: Contract ends Thurs 6:10 NBO. Tell G Wed. Book same flight.

I read it three times.

"Rosemary," my mother said. "I let her. I thought she was lonely."

"She was lonely."

"I let her read every word you wrote to me." Her chin shook. "I promised you I wouldn't tell, three years ago, and I kept it."
