Chapter 6: The Bridge

Ruggero saw the van in my face before he turned around.

"Inside," he said. "Now."

The side door of the van slid open, and I saw the barrel of a rifle before I saw the man.

Ruggero shoved me toward my hired car with one arm and pulled his gun with the other.

The first shots cracked off the wet street.

I threw myself over Rosa in the back seat and heard glass break somewhere above my head.

The driver was screaming.

Ruggero dropped into the seat beside me, slammed the door, and hit the roof with his fist.

"Drive!"

The car leapt forward.

His men were firing from behind the SUVs, and a bullet punched through the rear window and out through the windshield.

It didn't hit anyone, but it showered us in glass.

"Down," Ruggero said.

I curled around my daughter until my forehead pressed her blanket.

She woke up and started to scream.

It was the best sound I had ever heard.

The car skidded around a corner and hit the on-ramp for the bridge at sixty.

The van followed.

Two more cars came up behind it, and I saw muzzle flashes in the side mirror.

"Who are they?" I shouted.

"Somebody who knew where I'd be."

"Who knew where you'd be?"

"Four people."

"Which four?"

"I don't know yet!"

Then something hit the car from behind so hard that the whole frame rang.
