Chapter 5: The Driveway
Travis parked across the end of the driveway, which meant nobody's truck could leave.
He got out smiling, the easy way he did with customers.
The smile went away when he saw the boxes.
"Cass?" he said. "What's all this?"
Kendra got out of the passenger side, and she looked at me and then at my stomach and then at the ground.
In the back seat, a little girl in a pink princess coat was pressing her face to the window.
"Travis," I said from the porch. "I'm moving out."
"Out where?"
"Not here."
He laughed once, short and puzzled, and looked at his mother for help.
"Mom, what is she talking about?"
"She's had a hard week, sweetheart," Gail said. "Let's all go inside."
"No," I said.
It came out louder than I meant it to, and the neighbor with the recycling bin stopped pretending to sort her cans.
Two more doors opened up the street.
Travis took a step toward me, and I put my hand up.
"I'm not coming back, Travis."
"Cassidy." He lowered his voice, the way he did when he wanted people to hear it anyway. "You're thirty-four weeks pregnant and you're upset. I'll take responsibility for the other night. I got held up. It was Halloween, Kendra's girl was already in her costume, and you know how she gets when plans change."
"You left me at a rest stop."
"For forty minutes."
"For five hours," I said. "I called you twelve times. The twelfth one went through."
His face went blank.
"I heard everything you said," I said. "You told Kendra I loved you for ten years and would never leave."
