Chapter 8: The Letter

The lawyer's office was above a bakery on Main Street, and it smelled like cinnamon and photocopier toner.

Eli came in behind me with a manila envelope under his arm.

He had changed out of his work jacket into a plain gray coat, and he looked more nervous than he had in the ambulance.

"This is my statement," he said to the lawyer. "And a copy of the run report. I pulled it myself from the crew's file."

The lawyer read the first page and then the second.

"Found alone in a service plaza vestibule, thirty-four weeks, active labor, no transportation, patient states no family contact," he said. "This is exactly what I need."

"I wrote what I saw."

"Good. Don't change a word of it." He looked at me. "We also have the phone records. Twelve calls from your number to his between nine-thirty and eleven-forty. The last one stayed connected for over four minutes."

"I know."

"His phone was in the car. Which means the dashboard recorded the call's duration, and probably the audio."

I looked up.

"Probably?"

"Some of these systems keep voice data for a short while. If it's there, I can subpoena it. That's what you heard, Cassidy, and he can't say it didn't happen."

I let out a long breath.

It was the first time in a week that I had pictured a floor under my feet.

"There's something else," Eli said.

He took a small folded square out of his coat and laid it on the desk.

It was a school picture, creased down the middle.

A little girl with her chin lifted and her hair combed hard to one side.
