Chapter 9: Kendra

My friend wouldn't let me open the door alone.

She stood behind me in the hall with her phone in her hand and her thumb over the nine.

"I'm not here for Travis," Kendra said through the wood. "I'm not here for anyone. Please. Two minutes."

I looked through the peephole.

She hadn't brought the girl. She hadn't brought a car.

Her hood had fallen back, and her face was bare and swollen.

I opened the door the width of the chain.

"How did you find this address?"

"Gail has it. She has everything." She wiped her nose with her sleeve. "I walked from the bus stop. I didn't want to drive, in case she checked the app on my phone."

"Your phone is tracked?"

"The family plan is in her name. I'm on it."

My friend gave a short, disgusted breath behind me.

I took the chain off.

Kendra came in and stood on the mat without taking her boots off.

She wouldn't sit.

She held her elbows and looked at the floor.

"I owe you an apology," she said. "A real one. Not the one in your driveway."

"All right."

"I knew you were pregnant when I called Travis that night. I knew you were in the car."

"Then why did you call?"

"Because I was told to."

My friend and I looked at each other.

"By who?" I said.

"By Gail."

She said it very quietly.

"She calls me before every holiday. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Halloween. Sometimes his birthday. She tells me when to call and what to say, and if his phone is off, I'm supposed to try until he picks up. She told me that night to say my car wouldn't start."
