Chapter 12: The Door
I didn't open the door.
I put the chain on first.
Then I opened it four inches.
Glenn stood on the landing under the yellow bug light.
He'd been drinking. I could smell it.
Not a lot. Enough.
"How did you find this place?"
"Caleb's phone shares his location with me. I pay for it."
Of course he did.
"Go home, Glenn."
"Let me in."
"No."
He put his palm flat on the door.
He didn't push. He just left it there.
"You need to call off your lawyer."
"No."
"She's asking for the company's books. The bank's already calling me with questions."
"Then answer them."
"Jo, if they pull that loan, Chastain Development is done. Everything I built."
"Everything we built."
"You didn't build it!"
He shouted it.
A light went on across the alley.
He dropped his voice.
"You want to play hardball? Fine. Here's hardball."
He leaned in to the gap.
"You drop this, or I sit those kids down and I tell them what you are."
"What am I, Glenn?"
"A crazy, bitter, jealous woman who's trying to put their father in jail because he found somebody better."
